Established by Christopher K.P. Brown in January 2015, Pecola Breedlove & The Freedom Party is a gathering space for poets, lovers of poetry, and people of color who are simply looking for positive vibes in the city of Philadelphia. Influenced by the fictional character Pecola Breedlove (the main character in Toni Morrison’s first novel, The Bluest Eye), this poetry event is a space where you can find pride in being your authentic self and telling your own authentic story. Though the space caters to people of color specifically, we do welcome all races, genders, sexual orientations (binary and non-binary alike), and religions. We promote respect & love for all people who wish to attend and contribute to the good energy of the event.
For five years (2014-2019) Pecola Breedlove & The Freedom Party took place “EVERY DAMN TUESDAY” at A Poet’s Art Gallery over on 40th & Girard. Staring in April 2019 we’re expanding into two events: Breedlove Tuesdays & Freedom Fridays. Breedlove Tuesdays will take place EVERY 1ST TUESDAY of the month. Freedom Fridays will take place EVERY 3RD FRIDAY of the month. This means that we will have two events each month. Our Tuesday event will stick to our normal open mic + feature format. Our Friday event will serve as a poetry showcase with a very limited open mic. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions you have @breedlovephilly on IG or FB. Come on out and join us for Poetry, Food, & Positive Vibes.
